New Beginnings: Celebrating health, community and culture

Kelvin Leung founder sterling physiotherapy kew speech

It’s an exciting time for us here at Sterling Physiotherapy, now that we’ve officially opened our doors this month and made our services available to everyone in the community. As the founder, I thought I’d share a little bit about my story, our story, and what we hope to achieve through Sterling.

Back in 2013, as a newly-qualified physio, I would never have pictured myself as the owner of a physiotherapy clinic. The workload and responsibility involved was not something that appealed to me at the time, and I had so many career objectives, things, and places to cross off my list. I spent the following eight years doing exactly that - working at various clinics, getting involved in community health, moving abroad, working with professional athletes and teams, whilst getting my fair share of travelling around the world. In that time, I was able to gain a deep understanding of the industry and many of its complex perspectives.

It was interesting to observe how different clinics were run. I also saw some of the most challenging cases within the community health setting. I got to work with and witness first-hand the singular-focus mindset of elite athletes and their tolerance for sheer pain. My clinical knowledge developed just like any other skill: Repetition, reflection, and hours and hours of exposure.

More importantly, I’ve noticed time and again how important it is for people to “enjoy their craft”. To achieve that, it might mean a clinic fostering a workplace culture that encourages work-life balance. Or an employer/team leader who genuinely cares about their team of staff. Or a service that engages with its local community and actively contributes. Or being present with the person in their moments of ups and downs. People are able to do their best work and effect positive change to their surroundings, when they feel supported and connected to their community. Slowly, I began to visualise a space where all of the above were possible.

Going from a care-free, galavanting young physiotherapist to planning my own clinic was an enormous learning curve. But it made sense to me to create this space, and the responsibility of making it happen is now something that excites me. The values at Sterling Physiotherapy epitomises everything that I hope to achieve through my craft:

Celebrating health.

Empowering the community.

Creating a positive culture of balance.

Our work has begun, and we are already helping people at various points along their health journey. As our space grows, I am excited about what is to come and the effect we will have on people’s lives. Get in touch with us today if you would like to chat about your injuries, goals and how we could help.

…Welcome to Sterling!
